Formentor

Formentor__1__1.jpg

Formentor lies on the islands most northern point. Up on Cap de Formentor you have an amazing view, especially out by the lighthouse on clear days. Then you might be able to see all the way to the neighbor island of Menorca and west out over Cala Figuera and to the south over Alcúdia. The lighthouse was built in 1862. The cliffs descend abruptly 300 meters straight down into the ocean so this is not a place if you are afraid of heights! There is also a very luxury hotel and great swimming possibilities. The Formentor beach is said to be one of the islands best by many. It has white finely grained sand and a view of the Pollenca bay. The beach is child friendly and there are many pine trees. In the beginning, the hotel could only be reached by helicopter or by boat, but later on the road was built, in the 1950´s actually. The hotel was opened in 1929 right before the great stock exchange crash in the USA and the owner went bankrupt after a few years. The road up to Platja de Formentor is one of the most beautiful in all of Europe. From Puerto de Pollenca the road is 20 km long. Many birds and bird lovers come here.
