Ferrocaril de Sóller

ferrocaril_de_soller_1.jpgFerrocaril de Sóller is a small train which departs from Plaça Espanya in Palma with the destinaion Sóller. The name, Sóller means “the red flash”. The train was built in the 1930´s and the ride goes through a magnificent landscape full of mountains, pine trees and fruit orchards with almonds, peaches, figs and oranges. The train goes at a slow pace; the whole ride takes about one hour and it’s 27km long. The reason why they built this railway was that the village had something that was in great demand for exporting, namely oranges. Because it took ten hours at that time to travel to Palma they needed a faster transport way and therefore the railway was built.
